Rumor: Call of Duty HQ May Be About to Undergo a Major Change

MerrickGames2025-07-053408

The controversial Call of Duty HQ app could be about to undergo some major changes, as a new leak claims that 2022's Modern Warfare 2 and its sequel, Modern Warfare 3, will soon be separated from the launcher and turned into their own separate apps. Call of Duty's HQ app was introduced with the release of Modern Warfare 3 back in 2023, combining mainline entries in the series under a single application. Unfortunately, the concept has caused nothing but issues for fans, who have called for its removal ever since.

With the launch of 2019's Modern Warfare, the Call of Duty series underwent some major changes. Not only did Warzone revitalize the series a few months later with its own take on the Battle Royale genre, but Infinity Ward's reboot of its iconic Modern Warfare series also utilized a revamped version of the IW game engine. Although the titles that followed after all had individual apps, 2023 would see even more changes to the franchise as Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, and Warzone were all integrated into one single app known as Call of Duty HQ. Black Ops 6 was also added to the launcher upon its release in late 2024, much to the upset of fans.

The Call of Duty HQ app has been controversial for a number of different reasons, but the community regularly expresses its disdain for the launcher due to the clunky user interface and massive storage requirements. Players have often called for Activision to return the series to individual apps for each title, and although the publisher has never responded to these complaints, a new leak has fans wondering if the end of Call of Duty HQ could be in sight as data miner Reality claims that both Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 will soon be removed from the launcher.

Shortly after the launch of Call of Duty's Season 4 Reloaded update, Reality discovered in-game files that suggest Activision is gearing up to remove the two titles from the launcher and turn them into their own standalone apps, and fans couldn't be happier. According to a text string found in the game's files, players will need to redownload and install Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 at some point in the future, as they are set to be removed from the HQ app. In response to the leak, Twitter user Jaayshot exclaimed, "NO WAYYY LETS GOO," while Steven Alean said, "this is an extremely rare W." Others questioned whether this could be the beginning of the end for Call of Duty HQ, but some think it is likely just to prepare for future games to be added to the launcher.

The change has yet to go live, so there's no knowing when players will need to redownload Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3. However, with the recent reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, there's a high chance that Activision is simply removing older titles in order to make way for its upcoming launch. There's currently no release date for the next Black Ops game, but it is speculated to follow series tradition and launch in late October or early November. The shooter will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
