Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 is officially happening, featuring four iconic factions in a battle as they return to the world of Kronus in a massive story campaign. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 goes back to the roots of what made the series memorable in the first place when it arrives in 2026.

Dawn of War is an iconic RTS series set in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium. Though Dawn of War 2 and 3 were not without their flaws, the original Dawn of War from 2004 was considered one of the best real-time strategy games of the era, and was lauded as one of the first “good” Warhammer 40K games.

Now, nearly a decade after the last entry, Dawn of War is getting a new game. Revealed during Gamescom in the form of a short trailer, players will return to Kronus 200 years after the events of Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. The Blood Angels, led by Cyrus – played by prolific voice actor Steve Blum, who also narrated the trailer – must contend with the Orks and Necrons who still plague the planet. What’s more, they are joined by the Adeptus Mechanicus of Warhammer 40,000, who make their Dawn of War debut as an independent playable faction. The sequel will include over 70 campaign missions split between the four factions.

Rather than following in the footsteps of Dawn of War 2, which focused more on squad-based combat, Dawn of War 4 is all about base building. The in-development gameplay footage shows each faction constructing fortresses and sieging their opponents with massive armies reminiscent of the original game in a way that many fans will likely find refreshing.

Notably, Relic Entertainment, the studio responsible for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and its recent remaster, is not developing Dawn of War 4. King Art Games, which put out the award-winning alt-history RTS Iron Harvest, is taking the helm for the sequel – but from what footage is available of the game so far, it seems like the developers have done their homework on what did and did not work for its predecessors.

The original Dawn of War originally launched with four factions, though its subsequent expansions more than doubled this number, eventually ending with nine separate armies. If players are lucky, and Dawn of War 4 is successful, perhaps powerful Warhammer 40,000 factions like the Tyranids, Chaos Space Marines, Tau, and Eldar may be added in future DLCs.
