May-A Returns with Emotional New Single Redacted for Inspiration and Catharsis
Sydney-born pop singer-songwriter MAY-A has returned with a new single, entitled ‘[Redacted]’, marking her first new music of 2025. The song was co-written by MAY-A and her guitarist and partner Chloe Dadd, who also co-produced the song alongside Carlos de la Garza in Sydney’s Golden Retriever Studios. In a press statement, MAY-A explained that ‘[Redacted]’ was written with a need for catharsis, reflecting on both personal and political turmoil. “I wanted to take a moment and channel everything that’s been frustrating me into something that’s not only a release for me, but for anyone who feels the same,” she said. “There’s a lot going on in the world, and I think it’s important to laugh at the absurdity of it all – and to try and take action in the process.” To accompany the release of ‘[Redacted]’, MAY-A has shared a music video that she directed herself. The video is a visual representation of the song’s themes, with a mix of personal and political messages. Following the release of her second EP, Analysis Paralysis, in 2023, MAY-A relocated to Los Angeles and began work on her debut studio album, which is expected to include ‘[Redacted]’. She was selected to open for Glass Animals on their Australian tour last year, and has since made festival appearances at Stonefest and Yours & Owls. In April, she joined Cyndi Lauper on stage to duet on ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’. Back in January, the singer explained her partial withdrawal from public life in an Instagram post. “I got dropped by my record label, left my manager, lost a lot of friends, spent way too much money on lawyers, was very isolated and felt the heaviness of everything going on in the world,” she wrote. “I felt the worst I’d felt in a very long time. I deleted social media, and tried to slow down. I started looking towards my favourite authors, working on myself and strengthening my close relationships.” With ‘[Redacted]’, MAY-A has put her absolute everything into these songs and after a long 17 months, she feels like she’s come out the other side of the heavy stuff. “I can tell you to be expecting an album of my blood, sweat and tears in 2025,” she said.
