X-Men 97 Season 2: A Darker Vision for the Mutant Task Force
In a recent interview, the creator of X-Men '97, Beau DeMayo, shared his vision for the upcoming second season of the Marvel Animation show, which premiered on Disney+ in March 2024. Despite being fired as head writer shortly before the show's debut, DeMayo is still credited as a writer on Season 2. According to DeMayo, in his version of Season 2, the mutant task forces like the X-Men would be banned in the US, leading Xavier to found X-Corp and build the tower from the comics on the ruins of Genosha as a challenge for Val Cooper and the UN. He explained that he intended to explore the militarization of Xavier's dream in Season 2, moving them away from being heroes. The final reveal in the S2 finale (which has been cut) was that Onslaught was slowly gaining control of Xavier, making him defy the UN, start X-Corp, and militarize his team. When the X-Men realized this and Onslaught revealed himself at the end of Episode 9, they donned their classic 90s costumes again and returned to being heroes as they led the Avengers, X-Factor, and X-Force against Onslaught. DeMayo's vision for Season 2 included a climactic battle in Washington D.C. during Graydon Creed's inauguration, as Onslaught unleashed Ship (from the OG's Obsession) on the city. While a premiere date for X-Men '97 Season 2 has not yet been announced by Marvel, fans are eagerly anticipating more information on this highly anticipated second season.
