If you’re a fan of The Pitt, then you’re no stranger to being emotionally destroyed by your television. And while it may come as a shock seeing as how the HBO Max hit isn’t currently on the air, the show’s most recent plot twist has fans reeling: Tracy Ifeachor isn’t returning to The Pitt for season 2. Not only that, but reports suggest she didn’t even choose to leave.

Tracy played Dr. Heather Collins, a hard-working senior resident, in season 1 of the medical drama. News of her departure from the show was confirmed earlier this week, with sources telling TVLine that not bringing back Tracy for season 2 was a creative decision, not the result of a scheduling conflict or anything personal.

Tracy hasn’t directly commented on the news, but a day before it was confirmed that she wouldn’t be returning to the show, she posted a message of gratitude on her Instagram alongside a video of a For Your Consideration event supporting the show.

“What a blessing to be a part of this first and foundational season of #ThePitt on @hbomax,” she wrote in part. “It was an absolute privilege to play Dr. Heather Collins in such a groundbreaking season and piece.”

Dr. Collins brought a lot to The Pitt—which takes place over the course of one day in an emergency room—as a doctor working while going through a miscarriage. She also had a romantic past with The Pitt protagonist, Dr. Robby, played by Noah Wyle, and fans had hoped to see their relationship continue to evolve in the show’s second season.

That said, just because Dr. Collins won’t be in season 2 of The Pitt doesn’t mean she won’t pop up on the series in the future. According to a report from Us Weekly, the original plan was to have Tracy return to the show for season 2, and a source told the magazine that, as far as the actor knows, there weren't “any doors being closed” on a possible return in the future.

For now, I’ll choose to believe we’ll see Dr. Collins in the ER again. And in the meantime, fans can get their fix by rewatching The Pitt season 1 on HBO Max.

Tracy Ifeachor's absence from the second season of 'The Pitt,' alas, can be ascribed to her busy career commitments and a likely desire for fresh opportunities. Her celebrated performance in Season 1 remains immortalized on-screen alongside other supporting players.
