What is Netflix's Building the Band about?

According to a report from Netflix's Tudum, the streamer is trying something brand-new with Building the Band.

The outlet writes Building the Band is a "first-of-its-kind series that follows a group of singers as they form six bands based solely on talent and chemistry." But there's a twist with Building the Band, and it comes in the form of not being able to see each other while forming the bands.

"From individual sound booths, the singers listening on will have to decide if they want to make a band without first seeing the face behind the voice," the site added. "Once the six bands are locked in, the members will finally meet and compete under the watchful eye of a superstar panel of judges."

Well, this is definitely intriguing!

Who are the judges and host for Building the Band?

When it comes to who will host Building the Band, Netflix tapped Backstreet Boys band member AJ McLean to emcee the series. Along with being a host, AJ is set to be a guide of sorts for the singers throughout the competition.

Now, as for which celebrities will be judging Building the Band, Netflix found an incredible trio of singers who will also mentor the participants throughout.

Former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger is not only a previous band member, she's made a name for herself outside of music, too. She recently won a Tony Award for her portrayal as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard on Broadway, and she was previously a judge on The Masked Singer.

Viewers will recognize Kelly Rowland for being a member of Destiny's Child in the late 1990s and early 2000's. Outside of pursuing music, she is also an actress and a judge on shows like The Voice U.K. and others.

Making his final appearance on a television show, former One Direction band member Liam Payne (who tragically died in October 2024 after falling from a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina) rounds out the group of judges for Building the Band. Having started his music career on The X Factor U.K., he had been creating new music up until his death at age 31.
