One of just 54 BMW M1 Procars built, this untouched example remains in as-delivered condition and has never raced.
A pristine example of BMW’s legendary M1 Procar, untouched since new and never campaigned in competition, is set to cross the block at the Monterey Jet Center auction on Aug. 14. Broad Arrow Auctions estimates the car could fetch between $1.45 million and $1.85 million.
Chassis number 94301057 is one of only 54 Procars built to the demanding specifications of BMW’s short-lived, high-profile one-make Procar Championship. Delivered new in 1979 to famed racer and dealer Vasek Polak in California, the M1 remains in original paint, interior, and mechanical specification — a rarity in motorsport history.
The BMW M1 project, penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro and engineered with input from Gianpaolo Dallara, was intended for Group 5 racing. Delays and regulatory hurdles inspired BMW Motorsport chief Jochen Neerpasch to launch the Procar series, which paired the world’s fastest Formula One drivers with identical mid-engine machines at select Grand Prix weekends in 1979 and 1980. The resulting wheel-to-wheel battles became instant fan favorites.
This M1, prepared by Osella in Italy, was intended for the 1981 season, but FIA rule changes sidelined the plan. After limited break-in laps at Riverside Raceway, it was stored and never raced. Polak retained it until 1989, when it passed to its second owner, and eventually to its current caretaker in 2021.
Powered by a period-correct 3.5-liter inline-six producing about 470 horsepower, the Procar could reach speeds approaching 190 mph. Yet this example’s most remarkable feature is its untouched state — from fiberglass body panels to space frame chassis and factory finishes.
