This New Zealand Off-Road Trail Looks Amazing

There’s little doubt New Zealand has some fantastic scenery as well as amazing off-road trails. It’s a bucket list item of ours to go off-roading on the island and watching a group tackle the notorious Mt. Frederick trail only whets our appetite more.

Ford is cooking up a special new off-roader.

According to local adventurer and off-road enthusiast Hayden Jones, this trail, or what they call in that part of the world “track,” is one of the most famous in New Zealand. He claims it’s the island’s version of Moab. Before starting out on the journey, he says the trail will push them as they could very well “beak stuff” and get stuck.

The challenge of off-roading, at least for us, is a big part of why it’s so fun. If every excursion were easy, it just wouldn’t be as entertaining. Yes, it’s great to get out into nature and enjoy being away from civilization, but we can get that going for a hike.

With off-roading, it’s almost like being a modern pioneer or explorer. You’re setting out into nature in a mechanized beast, trying to overcome obstacles as well as dealing with equipment failures. Trail repairs bring out creativity and punish anyone foolish enough to not bring along tools as well as some heavy-duty zip ties.

What’s really cool to see with these rigs is that they not only are all Land Rovers, which are of course popular in New Zealand, but also the fact they’re not heavily modified. Don’t get us wrong, we love building trail machines, however we think some people confuse that with developing skill.

These guys are skilled off-roaders and that makes a huge difference. They don’t need 24 inches of wheel travel at all for corners, fancy electronics, and other gadgetry to get through some technical challenges.

Check out the trail action for yourself here.
