Shrinking Season 3: A New Chapter with Brett Goldstein, Cobie Smulders, Michael J. Fox, and Jeff Daniels
The highly anticipated third season of the Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking is currently in production, and fans are eagerly awaiting its return with a focus on moving forward. This year's theme follows previous seasons that centered on grief and forgiveness, and the show promises to introduce new and familiar faces to the audience. One of the new faces to join the show is Brett Goldstein, who returns as Louis, the drunk driver responsible for the death of Jimmy's wife, Tia. In the season 2 finale, Jimmy confronted Louis before he had a chance to throw himself in front of a train. During a recent Zoom call, fellow co-creator Bill Lawrence confirmed that Goldstein will be back for "multiple episodes" in Season 3, showing how Louis is moving forward in his own life. Lawrence also promises that we’ll see a lot more of Cobie Smulders, who was introduced in Season 2 as Sofi, a potential love interest for Jimmy. The show is about a tiny found family that built a nuclear safety bubble around themselves to get through tough times, and with people forgiving and opening up these doors, you see new characters like Isabella Gomez and Michael J. Fox joining the cast. Along the way, Jimmy will reconnect with his father, played by Emmy winner Jeff Daniels. Lawrence doesn’t say much about Daniels’ role but does offer a tease: “If you’re telling a story about found family, and a dude [like Jimmy] has another guy in his life as a father figure, then it’s interesting to explore what’s lacking on the real side for him.” Meanwhile, Paul, the aforementioned father figure, will be dealing with his worsening condition. Michael J. Fox will be joining the show and playing a crucial role in Season 3. Though Lawrence previously shared that Fox would be sharing scenes with Harrison Ford, the extent of Fox’s role had not been revealed until now. Lawrence says that Fox’s part is significant and that it was easy to have him play an actual character with Parkinson’s disease since the show deals with the condition. Although Shrinking was initially conceived for a three-season run, Lawrence is “very confident” that the show will continue beyond Season 3. He says that they always knew how Season 3 would end and that it feels like a super satisfying end to the story they’re telling but that there is still more to explore. For Season 4, they will have to tell a different story than the one they’ve been telling for three seasons. TVLine will keep you posted once Apple TV+ announces a return date for Shrinking. In the meantime, hit the comments with your hopes for the third (but probably not final) run of the show.
