The Misstep of Murder Most Puzzling: A Disappointing Quirky Crime Drama

In the world of British crime dramas, there are hits and misses, and Murder Most Puzzling falls squarely into the latter category. The show, which stars Phyllis Logan as Cora Felton, The Puzzle Lady, promises to be a quirky and unique addition to the genre. However, it fails to live up to its potential and is more of a two-star rip-off than a five-star treat.

The show starts off on the wrong foot with Cora's introduction. As a crossword compiler who has become so famous that she has her own range of biscuits and TV adverts, her character is unrealistically portrayed as being passed out at the wheel of her car after a spot of drink-driving. This sets the wrong tone for the show and signals that it doesn't quite know what it's supposed to be.

Despite the quirky setting in the fictional market town of Bakerbury (which is actually Lisburn in Northern Ireland), the show has some elements that conform to the cosy crime template: jaunty music, a picturesque setting, and the odd silly character, such as the blustering mayor in a cravat who runs the local police force. However, these elements are not enough to save the show from its flaws.

The three lead performances are the saving graces of the show. Phyllis Logan, best known as Mrs Hughes in Downton Abbey, does her best with the material, but her character is not fully developed or compelling. Charlotte Hope is a bright spot as Cora's niece and right-hand-woman, Sherry, but her character arc is underdeveloped and feels like an afterthought. Adam Best is the best thing in the show as DCI Derek Hooper, who has never worked a murder case before and reluctantly turns to Cora for help. However, his character is also underdeveloped and feels like a mere plot device.

There is a twist halfway through relating to Cora's job that is predictable if you've been paying attention. But even with its flaws, Murder Most Puzzling is still an interesting watch with some quirky moments and decent performances. So if you're looking for something different in your crime series, give it a try. But don't expect it to be on par with Ludwig or other top-tier British crime dramas.
