Netflixs The Adventures of Cliff Booth: Brad Pitts Follow-Up to Quentin Tarantinos Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Gets $20M Tax Credit
In a move that will surely excite fans of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Netflix has secured a massive $20 million tax credit for its upcoming film The Adventures of Cliff Booth. The project, which is directed by David Fincher and stars Brad Pitt, is an untitled follow-up to Tarantino's 2019 film.
The budget for the film is not yet known, but it is expected to have $105.9 million in qualified expenditures in the state of California. The project will be shot over 110 film days in California, with 128 cast members and 428 crew members hired, and 3,960 days for background players worked.
Pitt himself confirmed the start of production on the film during an interview on the London red carpet for his new movie F1. He said, "This is something Quentin Tarantino wrote. It’s an episode, not really a sequel, of the character from Once Upon A Time. He didn’t want to direct it at this point, so our friend David Fincher stepped in."
The film already has a cast that includes Carla Gugino and Yahya Abdul Mateen II, as well as Elizabeth Debicki and Scott Caan. The project is being financed by Netflix, which has kept the production details under wraps.
The latest round of tax credits announced this morning counted 48 projects totaling about $96 million, with 43 of the 48 projects being indie films with budgets of $10 million or less. The 48 projects are expected to yield $664 million in total spending throughout the state, including $485 million in qualified expenditures and $302 million in wages for California workers.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is looking to boost the state’s film and TV credits to $750 million annually, a plan that is on “the legislative precipice of coming true,” per Deadline’s Dominic Patten.
In addition to The Adventures of Cliff Booth, other notable projects receiving tax credits include Heidi Fleiss biopic One of Them Days, sequel Ang Lee’s latest film, and Darren Star’s Younger streaming resurgence.
