Roper St Francis Healthcare has officially broken ground on its new Roper Hospital campus in North Charleston, United States. The project, valued at $1.2 billion, is anticipated to have a substantial economic impact, estimated at $2.5 billion, and is projected to create around 3,600 jobs. The completion of the campus is targeted for 2029.
The 27-acre development represents the fourth location for Roper Hospital and is a key component of the Roper St Francis Healthcare 2030 Strategic Plan. The planned facilities include a full-service emergency department, multiple operating rooms with hybrid suites, inpatient units with modern features, and a medical office building for outpatient services. The campus will also offer a green belt, improved security systems, and a café as part of the campus amenities.
The Roper St Francis Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign, aiming to raise $100 million by 2030 to support innovation, access, and the hospital's relocation to North Charleston. E4H Environments for Health Architecture and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) are leading the design, with Barton Malow Builders and Edifice Construction as general contractors.
Despite the new development, Roper St Francis Healthcare is dedicated to maintaining a presence in Charleston's historic peninsula, where its first hospital was established. Plans to ensure continued service in the city's central area are currently under development.
Anthony Burchard, vice-president of Roper St Francis Healthcare and president of the Roper St Francis Foundation, said: "The ground-breaking of this new hospital also marks a significant milestone in our Imagine campaign, reflecting our community’s commitment to transforming healthcare in the Lowcountry."
In conclusion, the new Roper Hospital campus in North Charleston is a major investment in the future of healthcare in the region, with the potential to create significant economic benefits and job opportunities. The project is part of a larger strategic plan that aims to improve access to healthcare and support innovation in the community.
