NBA 2025 Draft Scouting Report: John Tonje, Wisconsins Off-Ball Scoring Threat with Room for Defense and Playmaking Improvement

HarmonySports2025-06-202110

John Tonje, a 24-year-old senior guard from Wisconsin, is poised to enter the NBA with a unique set of skills. At 6-5 and 212 pounds, Tonje boasts a readymade skill set as an off-ball movement scorer and shooter. His effortless release and ability to make 40.5% of his catch-and-shoot 3s as an upperclassman, per Synergy, make him a valuable asset on the perimeter. Off the ball, Tonje is constantly moving without the ball, looking for opportunities to back cut to the rim or relocate beyond the arc. In a handoff-heavy offense, he could thrive as a pull-up threat out of pick-and-rolls and as an attacker who can destroy closeouts with his decisive drives. While he’ll need to adjust to a lower usage role in the NBA, his go-to role at Wisconsin showed his abilities in these areas. However, Tonje’s defense is a concern. He doesn’t have great lateral quickness, and his size is only average. He’s also a below-the-rim finisher on drives to the basket and lacks a left hand. Additionally, his playmaking is limited due to a negative assist-to-turnover ratio in each of his college seasons. He gets way too out of control on his drives and lacks an advanced handle, resulting in a lot of flopping at the college level that won’t be rewarded at the next level. Overall, Tonje’s athletic ceiling and defense will determine if he’s more than just a backup in the NBA.
