M. Night Shyamalans Remain Filming in Warren, RI: A Day in the Life of the Movie Crew
RI, WARREN – As the news spread that M. Night Shyamalan would commence filming his latest movie in Warren at noon on June 18, the once-sleepy downtown district came alive with excitement. Friends Carol Wild, Thom Luthi, and Cassie Brimmer lingered over a late breakfast at Rhody Roots on Main Street, next door to the Coffee Depot, where Shyamalan started filming for the Warner Bros. movie "Remain," set to be released just before Halloween in 2026. Teah Sousa, a student on break from Roger Williams University, hung out at the corner of Main and Jefferson streets with her grandmother Marie Travers, eager to catch a glimpse of the action. While most of those gathered on the sidewalks hoped to catch a glimpse of a celebrity – "Remain" star Jake Gyllenhaal being the prime target – no one reported seeing any of the glitterati, though a hushed murmur rippled through the crowd when a black luxury van pulled up to the curb and a muscular man hopped out and headed into the Coffee Depot. People asked whether he could be Ashley Walters, one of the movie's leads, but a Brit not widely known to American audiences. Almost as quickly as the morning's commotion began, it was gone, as filming ended as scheduled at 2 p.m. Then, the movie crew was on the road for its next location: the Prudence Island Ferry dock in Bristol. But the movie wouldn't be shot on the dock – at least not until later in the evening. The crew loaded all of its equipment onto the ferry Herbert C. Bonner to film on the waters of Narragansett Bay. Before boarding the ferry, Shyamalan treated the cast and crew to lobster rolls, seafood chowder, and corn chowder from a food truck run by the Newport Chowder Company. Then, all the movie equipment was wheeled or carried up the ramp and onto the ferry, which, with a blast of its horn, departed the dock for several hours on the water.
