The Artistic and Financial Implications of Netflixs Decision to Keep Kevin Spaceys Canceled Movie Gore in the Vault

In a recent interview with IndieWire, producer Andy Paterson revealed that Netflix has vowed never to release or find a new home for the canceled Gore Vidal movie starring Kevin Spacey. The movie, which was based on the biography Empire of Self by Jay Parini, was announced in 2017 and was set to star Spacey as the famous writer known for his wit and novels examining social and sexual norms in America. However, following several accusations of sexual misconduct made against Spacey in 2017, the movie was promptly canceled by the streaming company.

Paterson, who was a producer on the project, has repeatedly asked Netflix to do something with the movie, but the company has claimed to never plan on releasing it. “I have repeatedly asked Netflix either to show the film or to give me the opportunity to find a new life for it,” Paterson said. “They have said that they do not intend ever to release the Picture or sell it to a third party.”

Paterson expressed his confusion as to why Netflix continues to have seasons of House of Cards (which stars Spacey) or other Spacey-led films on the platform, but are so staunch with not releasing Gore. “Netflix asserts its support for freedom of artistic expression yet it will not explain why this film should be buried when they still have the first five seasons of House of Cards and several Kevin Spacey films on their platform,” he said. “Their current excuse for dismissing my request is that they took a tax write-off on the film, but that could easily be resolved.”

At this time, it seems like Gore will never be released, with Netflix instead choosing to keep the film vaulted and listed as a write-off for the company’s losses. The decision has left many in the creative community, including Paterson himself, perplexed and frustrated.
