The Outer Worlds 2: Embracing Permanent Choices for a Deeper Role-Playing Experience

The highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, The Outer Worlds 2, is quickly gaining attention with a release date set for October 29. However, one notable feature missing from the upcoming title is the ability to respec one's character. In an interview with RPGSite, The Outer Worlds 2's game director, Brandon Adler, explained the reasoning behind this decision. Adler stated that while many players love the ability to respec their characters, he personally wants players to understand that their choices are permanent and matter. He believes this will encourage players to think more about their choices and make them more meaningful. This decision is a departure from the original Outer Worlds, where players could use the Vocational Competence Respecification Machine to respec their skills and perks. Adler further explained that he wants to "make sure that the role playing is really strong. I want to make sure that you're building your character and really doubling down - making sure that role-playing comes through the whole experience." This decision is part of a larger trend of subverting RPG norms, as The Outer Worlds 2 also won't have romance options, which is a big thing for some players. While respec isn't a standard RPG feature across the board, it is popular in many games where it appears. Games like The Elder Scrolls don't allow respec, forcing players to build into a playstyle or risk making the game harder for themselves. On the other hand, games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring allow respec and work well as a way to switch up a playthrough and try something new. There are pros and cons to both approaches, and there is no correct answer. Adler's decision to remove respec from The Outer Worlds 2 is a bold move that will undoubtedly be a topic of discussion among fans of the genre. However, it's clear that Obsidian is looking to create a unique and immersive experience with The Outer Worlds 2 by emphasizing role-playing and making choices that matter. This approach challenges players to think more deeply about their choices and build their characters in a more meaningful way.
