Jennifer Aniston is gearing up for one of her most emotionally complex roles yet, taking on the part of a controlling, narcissistic mother in a new Apple TV+ series, I’m Glad My Mom Died, based on Jennette McCurdy’s heartbreaking and darkly funny memoir. The streaming platform has officially greenlit the project with a 10-episode order.

The upcoming series will explore the painful and complicated relationship between McCurdy, the former child actress who rose to fame on Nickelodeon’s iCarly, and her abusive, domineering mother, played by Aniston. The show will delve into the codependent relationship at the heart of McCurdy’s life — capturing both the emotional weight and biting humor that made the 2022 memoir a bestseller.

When previously discussing the memoir’s provocative title McCurdy has said, "I always knew I wanted it to be called I’m Glad My Mom Died. I wanted something that would be bold and attention grabbing and hopefully people with a sense of humor would get — and also I think anyone who has experienced parental abuse understands.”

Published in 2022 to widespread acclaim, I’m Glad My Mom Died debuted at No. 1 on The New York Times best seller list and remained there for over a year. The series will be written and executive produced by McCurdy, alongside Ari Katcher (Ramy, The Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show), who will also serve as co-showrunner. Aniston is set to executive produce through her Echo Films banner.

Aniston previously collaborated with Apple TV+ on The Morning Show, portraying news anchor Alex Levy— a role that earned her two Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations. With the series returning for its fourth season on Sept. 17 and her upcoming role in I’m Glad My Mom Died, she may once again be part of the awards-season conversation. Having won an Emmy in 2002 for Friends, this challenging new role could mark another significant moment in her career and earn her a second Emmy.
