When the Blue Origin crew flew to space last April, I had no idea Lauren Sánchez brought a planet back to earth with her—but at her Venice wedding to Jeff Bezos, the bride-to-be had a boulder on her ring finger. The megawatt diamond shimmered with a gravitational pull so captivating that I could hardly register her Schiaparelli couture dress.

It’s a good thing I never received my invitation to the wedding of the decade in the mail, because I surely would have scorched my retinas staring at that rock—and I would have had jeweler Lorraine Schwartz to blame. Burak Tirtirian, of NYC based jeweler Cicada, suspects the gem to be an internally flawless D-color diamond, an A+ for both color and clarity that is, as he tells Bazaar, “nothing short of extraordinary.”

A spectacle of nature made even more rare by its scale, the brilliant cut oval diamond looks to weigh in at approximately 30-40 carats, according to Natural Diamonds Council expert Grant Mobley. “Set in a refined platinum mounting with a discreet double hidden halo, the design is covered in pavé-set natural diamonds,” he explains. “With its rare combination of size, exceptional color, and remarkable clarity, the ring is estimated to be worth around $4 million, making it one of the most significant celebrity engagement rings in recent memory.”

The union between Sánchez and her latest confection by Schwartz is a match made in heaven. While Sánchez's bridal wardrobe, including Schiaparelli couture and a bespoke gown by Dolce & Gabbana, signaled a noteworthy departure from her typical uniform, the bride has long embraced juicy gemstones. (I still catch myself dreaming about the emerald Lorraine Schwartz suite she wore to the Vanity Fair Oscar party).

Schwartz has a strong roster of A-list admirers. Stars from Beyoncé to Kim Kardashian pay a visit to her arsenal of luscious stones when the occasion calls for a thick layer of frosting. At the lavish Sánchez-Bezos nuptials, guests including Kendall and Kylie Jenner and Khloe Kardashian came readily gilded in emerald and diamond jewels from the LA-based jeweler.

Before the bride's weighty diamond made its public appearance at the couple's festivities, her ring finger endured months of conditioning courtesy of her 20-30 carat radiant cut, natural pink diamond engagement ring. Diamonds possessing this blush tint are scarce. “Most pink diamonds ever discovered originated from a single mine in Western Australia, adding to the stone’s exceptional provenance,” Mobley says. “Given its unique color, rarity, and size, the ring is estimated to be worth between $4 and $5 million.”

Though not confirmed, the jewel is rumored to be yet another Schwartz confection. And while it is no longer on that finger, Sánchez simply rehoused it on her right hand to make way for its ellipse-shaped cousin. After all, two diamonds are better than one.

With the demand for bespoke engagement and wedding rings on the rise, Sánchez's bridal jewels hyperbolize shifting trends in color and cut. Before the couple said "I do," celebrities from Zendaya to Lady Gaga embraced oval shaped stones in their own engagement rings. “I have seen a shift towards oval, specifically elongated oval or 'moval,' which is a marquis-meets-oval cut,” says jeweler Vanessa Fernandez. The Miami-based designer won the “Best in Bridal” category at the Couture 2024 Jewelry Awards with her “Curva” ring designs. Marked by meandering gold bands that embrace fluid twists, Fernandez's signature style accentuates the gems' distinct qualities.

While it is unclear whether Mrs. Bezos will make another trip to space, the cosmic impact of her wedding ring has already sent ripples through the jewelry and bridal industries. It's a jewel poised to go down in history, and we're keeping our eyes peeled for the next gem that strikes the surface.
