Club World Cup 2025: PSG thrash Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich dominates Auckland City - Yahoo Sports
The 2025 Club World Cup is in full swing, with an exciting slate of games on Sunday. The four matches — some incredibly lopsided, some more even — resulted in three wins and a hard-fought draw.
Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, two of the best clubs in the world, are showing their early dominance at the tournament. Meanwhile, some non-European squads, such as Brazilian club Palmeiras and Botafogo, are putting up strong performances to open the group stage.
Day 2 FIFA Club World Cup results
Bayern Munich 10, Auckland City 0
One of the most lopsided matchups in the tournament ended about how you would expect. Bayern Munich, the sixth-best club in the world, crushed Auckland City — an amateur team ranked No. 5,704 in the world — in decisive fashion to open Day 2. Five Bayern players scored in the win; Jamal Musiala, who subbed in at the 61st minute, netted a hat trick before the end of the game.
Uneven matchups such as this make it harder for FIFA to justify its claim about the tournament bringing together the best of the best. At least Bayern Munich won't have to worry about goal differential heading into the final two group stage games against Boca Juniors and Benfica.
Paris Saint-Germain 4, Atlético Madrid 0
Despite being a more even matchup, PSG vs. Atlético Madrid felt similarly one-sided. The UEFA Champions League winners dominated Atlético across the board for a 4-0 win in front of more than 80,000 fans at the Rose Bowl. PSG struck first with goals from Fabián Ruiz and Vitinha in the first half, going up 2-0 early. Atlético star Julián Alvarez finally got a goal early in the second half, but it was called back due to a foul in the run-up.
Atlético's very bad day continued in the 78th minute, as center back Clément Lenglet was given his second yellow card after complaining to the referee and had to exit the game; as a result, Lenglet will miss the club's second group-stage match against the Seattle Sounders. After another PSG goal from Senny Mayulu, Atlético conceded a penalty kick to Lee Kang-In after a very unfortunate handball in the final seconds of the game.
Palmeiras 0, Porto 0
Palmeiras and Porto played a well-fought 0-0 draw in the third match of the day, with neither team able to break through despite a number of key chances. Attacking phenom Estêvão, an 18-year-old rising star for Palmeiras who is set to depart for Chelsea after this tournament, had an early chance, sending a shot just wide in the fifth minute. But Porto's defense held strong throughout the game, even as Palmeiras had more shots on goal and more possession throughout the match. Much of that was due to a stellar performance from goalkeeper Cláudio Ramos, who had two of the best saves of the tournament — one right after the other.
Botafogo 2, Seattle Sounders 1
The nightcap saw the home team, the Seattle Sounders, fall 2-1 to Brazil's Botafogo at Lumen Field in Seattle. Botafogo took control of the first half with goals from Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus, and a Sounders goal from Cristian Roldan wasn't enough to earn the Sounders a point.
With matches remaining against European teams PSG and Atlético, the Sounders are facing a winless group stage in a tournament they entered while still mired in a bitter dispute over the size of their Gold Cup winnings cut.
