Big Freedia, the iconic bounce artist, is preparing to release her first-ever gospel record, Pressing Onward. The LP is set to drop on August 8th, and the track list includes collaborations with Billy Porter and Tamar Braxton. In a post on Instagram, Freedia shared her thoughts on the album, which she describes as a message of healing for the world. The album title is a tribute to Freedia’s late partner Devon, who died recently. “Losing my partner Devon so suddenly changed everything,” she said. “This album started as a message of healing for the world—but now, it’s me who’s holding on to the music for strength.” The upcoming album will feature 14 songs, including tracks titled “All I Need,” “Pew,” “Let It Rain,” and “Praise Dance.” The LP also includes “Holy Shuffle” with Billy Porter and “Sunday Best” featuring Tamar Braxton. Freedia has been waiting her whole career to make this album, she said in a press release. “The church always spoke to me: the drama, the choir, and the attire. We are in uncertain times, I’m hoping fans can get some faith and hope from this album.” Freedia led the LP with “Take My Hand” back in March. She previously described the era of music as “taking it back to my roots.” She grew up being the choir director of her high school and home church in New Orleans and performed with the New Orleans Gospel Music Workshop of America.
