Auburns 6-10 Super Senior: Johni Broomes NBA Draft Scouting Report

AlvinSports2025-06-204520

In the 2023 NBA Draft, one player who has garnered significant attention is Johni Broome, a super senior center/forward from Auburn University. Standing at 6-10 and weighing 249 pounds, Broome brings a ready-made game as an interior finisher with a passing feel and tone-setting defense. However, his shaky jumper has not progressed as much as NBA teams would hope.

Strengths:

  • Effort: Broome sets the tone for his team by showing emotion after big plays. He leads with his effort by running the floor hard, hustling, and communicating on defense.
  • Defense: A hard-nosed defender with innate timing for blocking shots around the rim, Broome is a force to be reckoned with on the defensive end.
  • Playmaking: A savvy passer out of the low post and high post, Broome uses his vision to hit cutters or kick out to shooters with precision. His ability to read defenses and deliver slick, timely feeds adds a connective layer to his game beyond just scoring.
  • At-rim finishing: A crafty ambidextrous finisher at the rim, Broome is comfortable scoring against length and contact. He is aggressive and capable of driving through defenders or mixing in spin moves to create space. He also has good touch on floaters and hook shots further from the basket.
  • Post scoring: While a capable post player, Broome’s primary value in the NBA will be screening since he can receive the ball in the pocket and dribble to the rim or make slick passes to teammates.

Concerns:

  • Shooting: Broome made only 31.2% of his 3s in five college seasons and only 61% of his free throws. If he’s not able to reliably space the floor, then fit becomes a concern.
  • Athleticism: Not an elite athlete switching, Broome only has a 7-foot wingspan and is not quite nimble enough against quicker guards on a switch.
