As the 2025 TV season comes to a close, the conversation around which shows will take home the prestigious 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards has begun. The Television Academy will be looking to honor programs that aired between June 1, 2025 and May 31, 2025, a period of time that has been marked by the widespread contraction of work in the industry and the devastating wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles in January. The Outstanding Drama Series category is particularly competitive this year, with Emmy winners such as "Severance," "The White Lotus," "The Last of Us," "Squid Game," and "The Handmaid's Tale" all returning to the race for more awards. New hits like "The Pitt" on HBO Max and "Paradise" on Hulu are also in the mix, making it a highly anticipated category. Similarly, "Hacks," "The Bear," "Abbott Elementary," "Only Murders in the Building," and the final season of "What We Do in the Shadows" are all back in the Outstanding Comedy Series race, which has become increasingly competitive over the years. Looking back at the winter awards season, not many new shows managed to break through, with limited series such as "The Penguin" on HBO and "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" on Netflix being the exceptions. However, as we saw with "Baby Reindeer" last year, there is still room for more shows to surprise and delight us in time for the first round of Emmy voting wraps up on June 23 and nominations are announced on July 15.
